2019 ICC India Arbitration Conference, Mumbai, India, 7 December 2019



On 7 December 2019, I had an opportunity to attend and participate in the 2019 ICC India Arbitration Conference, at Mumbai. 

There were about 150 delegates and speakers from India and abroad to discuss the key issues in domestic and international arbitration. 

The topics included: Dialing 101 - Emergency Arbitrations- Clarifying Concepts: applicability, admissibility, jurisdiction and urgency of Emergency Arbitration. Arbitration in India - (still) a quagmire or learning from the past? - Speaking from Experience. Oxford style debate: Time and Cost Efficiency - a Myth in Indian Arbitration? 

The panel discussions provided ample opportunity to interact with the noted speakers and also for networking.

ICC India Arbitration Conference, Pune, 1 June 2019



ICC India and ICC International Court of Arbitration hosted the Conference in Pune, on 1 June 2019, to discuss key issues in domestic and international arbitration. The half day conference brought together leading practitioners to share their arbitration experiences and engage in interactive debates with a special attention on Indian practice and experiences under the ICC Arbitration Rules. 

The Conference was enriched by the presence of in-house counsels, legal practitioners and academics interested in the field of dispute resolution. It was also attended by good number of business people. 

The programme included panel discussions on the following subjects: 
  • Changes in the Arbitration Act and ICC Institutional Arbitration
  • Domestic Practices in Arbitration: Good, Bad and Ugly
The  moderators and speakers included leading personalities like: Kamal Vajani (Member: ICC International Court of Arbitration), Sahil Kanunga (Nishith Desai Associates, Mumbai), Akanksha Bhagat (Associate, Clifford Chance, Singapore), Vivek Sadhale (Partner, LegaLogic, Pune), Abhinav Bhushan (Director, South Asia, ACC Arbitration and ADR, Singapore), Aditya Mehta (Partner, Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, Mumbai), Kritika Venugopal (Senior Associate, Herbert Smith Freehills, Singapore) Raj Panchamatia (Partner, Khaitan & Co., Mumbai) Shraddha Bhosale (General Counsel, Weikfield Group, Pune)

Overall it was a great experience in listening and also networking.

ILSCA Arbitration Week 2019



The ILS (Indian Law Society) Centre for Arbitration and Mediation organised a Arbitration Week at ALS Law College, Pune, during 15-18 Frbruary 2019. 

Dr J D Bapat attended and participated in proceedings. 

The National Arbitration Conference was organised on the second day, i.e. on 16 February. The conference sessions and the resource persons were as follows:

Session 1: Institutional Arbitration

On the third day, i.e. on 17 February 2019, "Arbitration Training Program" was organised, covering the following:

(i) Writing of Arbitration Clause
(ii) Drafting of Pleadings, which included submissions and drafting of submissions, reply and general format of replies, Evidence affidavit before an arbitrator, cross and chief questions and their format, expert testimony and arbitration, interim award
(iii) Drafting an Arbitral award

On the last day, i.e. on 18 February 2019, "National Arbitration Award Writing Competition" was organised. In the first of the day, practical simulation of mock arbitration session was conducted. The competition was conducted in the second half of the day. A problem related to the construction industry was given to write the arbitral award.
